Mickelson tamped down grass with his foot in front of the seventh tee on Sunday at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in West Virginia.

Mickelson immediately realised his mistake and reported himself to a rules official, which resulted in him receiving a two-stroke penalty and carding a double-bogey six.

This marks Mickelson's first start since the U.S. Open, where he created a storm of controversy by deliberately hitting a moving ball on the green during the third round.

'My anger and frustration got the best of me last weekend.

Watching the miscue, it looks like an innocent enough mistake, and Phil was quick to consult a rules official after realizing what he had done.

Phil Mickleson had a bad Geenbrier Classic and earned himself a two-shot penalty thanks to his actions of stomping down on a piece of grass to improve his line of play.

After the round, Mickelson told reporters that he was planning to hit a low iron shot on No. 7 that he expects to use frequently over the next two weeks in Scotland and "wasn't really paying attention or thinking".

In a text message to a number of American golf writers who he had breezed by without comment at Shinnecock Hills, he eventually said: 'I know this should have come sooner, but it's taken me a few days to calm down. It was clearly not my finest moment and I'm sorry'.

The penalty did not affect Mickelson's chances of winning the tournament. He started the day 13 shots off the lead.
