An Ontario Woman Stole A Car By Mistake And Didn’t Realize For 2 Weeks

After shopping, she hopped in a vehicle she thought was hers, started it up and drove away.

Police say the woman initially rented a black sedan from Enterprise in Cornwall in June.

From there she headed to Walmart, where she did a little shopping before tracking down a black vehicle in the sea of cars parked outside.

After 2 weeks, she came back to Enterprise return the vehicle, and she made sure she complained to the manager about giving her a dirty, obviously used auto.

Though police say there was a "happy and amusing ending to this story", they say it serves as a ideal reminder not to leave key fobs in unattended vehicles. According to police, she complained to the manager about the state of the vehicle, saying that the inside was poorly cleaned and that there was a set of golf clubs left in the auto.

This allowed the woman to drive off, completely unaware that it wasn't her rental.

And it wasn't until this past weekend when the woman returned the vehicle to the same auto rental company that the manager pieced the entire situation together and realized what had happened.

"In conversation with the manager of that establishment it came out that he was the owner of a black Infiniti that was recently stolen", MacKay said. When they reached the Walmart parking lot, the rental vehicle was still sitting in the same spot where it had been parked two weeks before, police noted. And she didn't realize her mistake for another two weeks.

The Walmart was just a short drive from the vehicle rental agency.

At first, he tried to tell her that the company didn't even rent that model - but she was having none of it.

None of this tipped her off, until the manager drove with her over to the Walmart parking lot where the Nissan she had rented was still parked.

MacKay said he has been an officer for 11 years and has never experienced anything like this, but is glad that it had a happy ending.

"She was upset because the ashtray was dirty, there were papers in the glove box, and there were golf clubs in the back".

Since the Infiniti owner had reported his vehicle stolen, the police were able to track him down and return the auto. "Once inside, the woman spoke to the manager and commented about how unkempt the inside of the vehicle was and the fact that there was a set of golf clubs in it as well", police said on Facebook.
