New HIV Vaccine discovered, Hopes rises for treatment

Dr. Dan H. Barouch is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and the director of the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research. The challenges in the development of an HIV vaccine are unprecedented, and the ability to induce HIV-specific immune responses does not necessarily indicate that a vaccine will protect humans from HIV infection, Barouch said. It's one of just five vaccines to ever make it that far in testing, but those that have weren't effective enough to go further.

Barouch reminded that this is the "fifth HIV vaccine concept" that has been tested in the four decades of the advent of HIV. In the phase one clinical trial, researchers focused on HIV-1.

Now published its key data on early stages, explained in the company Johnson & Johnson, whose daughter Janssen pharmaceuticals has developed a vaccine.

The mixture of HIV strains in the "mosaic" vaccine is delivered using a nonreplicating common-cold virus. The HIV vaccine has produced an favorable immune system response when tested on 393 people, according to the Lancet.

The most effective combination was called the Ad26/Ad26 plus gp140 vaccine candidate - it protected two-thirds of the vaccinated monkeys against infection.

For now, people infected with HIV rely on lifelong virus-suppressing anti-retroviral treatment (ART) to stay healthy.

Results showed that all vaccine regimens tested were capable of generating anti-HIV immune responses in healthy individuals and were well tolerated, with similar numbers of local and systemic reactions reported in all groups, most of which were mild-to-moderate in severity.

It has also helped to protect monkeys from the virus similar to HIV. They gave the monkeys the HIV-1 vaccine to protect against a simian-human immunodeficiency virus, i.e., HIV that infects monkeys.

To test the vaccine, the team gathered nearly 400 adults with HIV aged between 18 to 50 from 12 clinics in southern and eastern Africa, Thailand and the U.S.in 2015.

More than three decades after the identification of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), scientists are still working to develop a preventative vaccine that could finally put an end to the epidemic for which there are almost two million new infections each year.

Worldwide, there are more than 37 million people with HIV or AIDS, and every year there are 2 million new cases of infection with the virus. Over a 48-week period, they were given four vaccines. Scientists must await the results of this trial find out whether the vaccine cannot only provoke an immune response, but actively protect against HIV.

However, researchers said these results should be interpreted cautiously. Thus, an HIV vaccine is needed badly.

"The road to the clinic is still unpredictable since the exact mode of action in humans is still unknown and the 67 percent protection in monkeys might not be replicable in humans", said George Williams Mbogo from the Burnet Institute in Australia, who wasn't involved in the study.
