New Brunswick's economy bled 1,100 jobs in June, pushed unemployment rate up

The Labor Department said that average hourly earnings rose five cents, or 0.2% in June after increasing 0.3% in May.

Before December 2017, the unemployment rate in the region never dipped below six per cent since comparable statistics started being recorded. Compared to a year ago, the labour force is up by 5,900 and the number of people employed is up by 4,900.

The growing optimism that people can find work suggested that the 9-year old US economic expansion - the second-longest on record - has the momentum to keep chugging along.

Last month, USA employers added 213,000 jobs, exceeding already high expectations of 195,000. Revised figures for April and May bring the monthly average for this year to 214,000 jobs-up from 182,000 the year before.

The participation rate for the London area (the percentage of adults in the London area either working or looking for jobs) continues to edge up to 61.5 per cent and is slightly better than a year ago, but still below the national rate of 65.4 per cent.

Manufacturers added 36,000 jobs last month. Full-time employment was up by 9,100 By sector, employment in goods producing industries was up by 46,600, the highest since April 2012, led by construction and manufacturing Service producing industries lost 14,700 jobs during the month Self-employment was up by 22,000, with employment in the public sector rising by 11,800. For instance, Hispanic unemployment is at a new low, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some economists project economic output rose at better than 4% annual pace in the second quarter for the first time since 2014.

Yet the tax cuts have done little to generate substantial pay growth.

But for now the sector, which accounts for about 12 per cent of the USA economy, appears in good health.

The economy also faces a substantial threat from the Trump administration's trade war with China and from other, ongoing trade disputes with US allies, including Canada and Europe.
