In 2002, the state Department of Health said there were more than 4,100 human cases of the virus in the country, including 284 deaths.

Mosquitoes recently tested positive for West Nile Virus in CT.

With temperatures warming and mosquitos coming out of hiding, Alberta Health Services is once again reminding the public about the threat of West Nile Virus - something that just won't go away.

However, this first positive mosquito pool of the season is an indicator that the virus is still in our community.

What Is West Nile Virus?

Mosquitoes can be active at any time but are most active in the evening and throughout the night.

Higher numbers of other mosquito species are being detected in areas that received rainfall over the past two weeks. Mosquitoes can then transmit it to other birds or to humans or horses.

Some people who contract West Nile develop neurological syndrome, which can be deadly.

- Make sure that doors and windows have tight fitting screens. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all residents of areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of getting West Nile encephalitis. For more information call the Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District at 530-533-6038 or 530-342-7350.
