Patients that have had a recent heart attack or heart failure also use these drugs. One-hundred-and-four drugs were cleared of the measure Monday while the remaining 115 carcinogen-containing pills remain off the market, following component analyses.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a recall yesterday (July 10) of all batches of valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide 160/12.5mg film-coated tablets - used to treat high blood pressure and heart conditions - made by Accord Healthcare.

The Drug Administration under the Ministry of Health on Tuesday tasked all provincial departments of health and medicine manufacturers and pharmacies to suspend the circulation of all types of medicine containing Valsartan by the China-based Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical Company indicated in a designated list, the Vietnam News Agency reports. The drug regulator for the European Union said it would conduct an assessment of the severity of the problem for those who are now taking drugs containing Valsartan.

She continues, explaining that patients should go to the pharmacy and see "if the drugs they're taking are indeed the affected, recalled valsartan products". The agency banned sales and recalled all drugs containing Valsartan made by the Chinese company.

Over 484,682 kilograms of Valsartan have been imported to Korea over the last three years, according to the ministry, but only 2.8 percent, or 13,770 kilograms, contain ingredients from China.

The medications contain the ingredient "valsartan" which was found in some products to have an impurity called N-Nitrosodimethylamine, a potential human carcinogen that could cause cancer with long-term exposure.

Oh Beom-jo, a professor of family medicine at Dongguk University Medical Center, said, "Patients will be confused about whether their drugs are problematic or not".

Health Canada is advising Canadians taking any valsartan drug to contact their pharmacist and health-care provider to determine what steps to take.
