Longest lunar eclipse of the century happening in July

Eclipse 2018 Blood Moon and planet Earth

On the bright side, the lunar eclipse doesn't take place for a few weeks, on July 27, so there's enough time to book a flight to check it out!

For those outside the lunar eclipse's line of sight, the Virtual Telescope Project will be livestreaming the moon's descent into darkness beginning at 2:30 p.m. EDT.

The Moon and Mars will be putting on a show this July, even if New Zealand doesn't get to see all of the event being dubbed the longest lunar eclipse of the century. Instead of appearing bright and illuminated, the full moon will be reddish-giving the event its colloquial name, the "blood moon".

Why red, you might ask? When this happens, our atmosphere scatters light with shorter wavelengths (i.e. greens and blues).

The Moon will turn a red or ruddy-brown color during the "blood moon eclipse", Space.com reports. During the eclipse, the moon will enter the shadow of the earth for about four hours, and the event will be seen clearly across at least three continents, officials said.

What makes this lunar eclipse longer than the others? This month, the moon will go through the center of the shadow, extending the duration of the eclipse.

Earth and Mars orbit the Sun at different distances, and thus different speeds.

Eerie as it may be, the moon's face appears rouged for the same reason the sky looks blue to our eyes. The duration of the full eclipse is 1 hour and 43 minutes (23:30 pm to 01:13 am). Eastern) until 9:13 p.m. UTC (5:13 p.m. The eclipse will be mainly visible in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia, as well as some parts of South America.

Unlike solar eclipses like last year's much-hyped summer spectacular, in which the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking the sun from view, a lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the moon and the sun, obscuring the moon from the sun's illumination.
