7065 Canadian workers aged 35-74 were tracked over a 12 year time frame using national health survey data and medical records.

The findings revealed that, overworking among women was associated with 63 per cent of higher risk of diabetes among women where as incidence of diabetes in men was found mainly among older age groups, and those who were obese.

Women who work long hours may face a higher risk of diabetes.

"If you think about all the unpaid work they do on their off-hours, like household chores for example, they simply do more than men, and that can be stressful, and stress negatively impacts your health", said study co-author Mahee Gilbert-Ouimet, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto.

"Working 45 hours or more weekly can be associated with an increased incidence of diabetes, and of course, in [the United States] many have a double job, so they work many more hours than what is quoted by our Ontarian neighbors", Zonszein said. The study suggests that people should balance their work and life to avoid such risks.

Long work hours did not increase the risk of developing diabetes among men.

Research conducted in the past has suggested links between long work hours and increased risk for diabetes, most of which focused on men.

It is not yet certain why it has only been observed in women but further studies have shown that it might have to do with the fact that women do not stop working even after they leave the office as they have to take on other responsibilities at home. Moreover, the gender pay gap between men and women also plays an important role.

A range of influencing factors were taken into account, such as age, marital status, long-term health conditions, lifestyle and body mass index (BMI).

"Considering the rapid and substantial increase of diabetes prevalence in Canada and worldwide, identifying modifiable risk factors such as long work hours is of major importance to improve prevention and orient policy making, as it could prevent numerous cases of diabetes and diabetes related chronic diseases", they conclude. Higher stress can also disrupt sleep and lead to poorer mental health, which in turn can contribute to changes in weight and insulin levels, and contribute to diabetes.

Some researchers also claim that there is an economic argument for employers in reducing work hours to less than 40 hours a week. Over the time those people were analyzed, 10 percent of them developed type 2 diabetes.
