More than one alleged poacher thought to be killed by lions

Park staff came across a grisly scene as a human head, bloodied limbs and three pairs of shoes were discovered at Sibuya Game Reserve near Kenton-on-Sea in Eastern Province.

A hunting rifle with a silencer attached and a long axe and wire cutters were recovered at the scene by police.

Officials searched for more possible missing poachers in the area but none were found.

"They strayed into a pride of lions it's a big pride so they didn't have too much time", reserve owner Nick Fox, 60 said.

He added: "They came heavily armed with hunting rifles and axes which we have recovered and enough food to last them for several days so we suspect they were after all of our rhinos here".

A pride of lions ate a group of poachers after they broke into a game reserve earlier this week in South Africa to hunt rhinoceroses.

Nature's justice: At least three poachers are believed to have been eaten by lions at the Sibuya Game Reserve.

The gruesome remains were found on the night of July 3, but teams had to wait until daylight the next day when the area was declared safe to recover the body parts.

"Clearly, the poachers had walked into a pride of six lions and some, if not all had been killed", Fox said.

The game reserve is one of the most popular in the Eastern Cape, and it is visited by many British tourists.

"I think we had a stroke of luck here that the lions got to them before they got to the rhinos".

Fox said he suspected more than one person was attacked by the lions - based on the evidence found on the scene. "We lost three rhinos in March 2016".

The Eastern Cape are is a "hotbed for rhino poaching", The South African reports, with nine rhinos having already fallen victim to poachers this year.

Captain Mali Govender, a police spokesperson, revealed that detectives are investigating the incident to determine exactly how many people were eaten.

In February a poacher hunting lions in the Umbabat Game Reserve near the Kruger National Park was killed by lions and was identified by his sister in law from his head - the only part of his body left.
