"These are the last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska that survived and it is sad to say goodbye to our dedicated customers", Kevin Daymude, the stores' general manager, said in a Facebook post.

According to Deadline, the stores officially close on Monday, but will sell off their remaining inventory from Tuesday until the end of August.

In April, John Oliver, host of HBO's Last Week Tonight, sent the DeBarr, Anchorage store a significant amount of Russell Crowe memorabilia purchased from the actor's divorce auction, including the jockstrap from the 2005 boxing film Cinderella Man, in a last-ditch bid to keep the store open.

Kevin Daymude, owner of the two Alaska stores, told the AP that the increased revenue was welcome, but that a planned lease increase on the two buildings was too much for his business to overcome. But to the best of her knowledge, after the Alaska stores close, her location will be the only one left in America. That leaves a lone Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon as the last man standing in a video chain that, at its peak, had more than 9,000 stores, half outside the United States, and employed more than 84,000 people worldwide.

Some have credited expensive internet as a factor in keeping the Alaska locations open longer than most stores.

The last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska will close. We hope to see you at our stores during the closing, even if it's just to say 'Hello.' What a great time to build your media library and share some Blockbuster memories with us.

Blockbuster gave in and declared bankruptcy in 2010, and its remaining 1,700 stores were bought by Dish Network in 2011. At its peak, the video rental chain had more than 9,000 stores in operation at one time. "If you'd asked me 14 years ago, there's no way I'd thought we'd be the last one". "I can't thank John Oliver or his show enough". In 2013, the store said it would shut down 300 stores and cut 3,000 jobs.

Blockbuster formally closed all company-owned stores by January 2014, leaving franchisees to fend for themselves.

Blockbuster also runs a streaming service and vending machines in some European countries, as well as several physical locations in Australia.
