Seoul's decision on Tuesday to "temporarily suspend" the nationwide civilian drills had been anticipated since the United States and South Korea halted their annual military exercises following a summit last month between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

However, officials say it could be months before excavations can begin and years until the remains are identified.

Pompeo insisted the talks were making progress but as soon as he left, the North's foreign ministry berated him over his "unilateral and gangster-like" demands and for offering no constructive steps on the USA side.

South Korea has suspended its summertime civil defence drills aimed at preparing against a North Korean attack to keep alive a positive atmosphere for nuclear diplomacy with the North.

Pompeo was reportedly promised a meeting with Kim, but Kim appears to have toured a potato farm instead, according to pictures released by North Korean media.

Mount said Trump's reaction would be a concern.

The Ulchi civilian drills were launched in 1968, a year after a failed attempt by North Korean commandos to assassinate then-South Korean dictator Park Chung-hee.


But one day earlier, the majority of the Chinese audience actually sided with Pompeo and responded negatively to Pyongyang's reluctance to pick up its pace of denuclearization.

Putin has invited the North Korean leader to the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, but Kim has yet to reply. He repeated that the United States would not push for any sanctions relief until after North Korea proved its nuclear program no longer existed and could not be rehabilitated.

Since the summit, Trump has taken to praising Kim.

Trump later added on Twitter that the decision would "save a fortune".

Pompeo himself reportedly laughed when asked about the CD last week but did not confirm or deny the South Korean newspaper report.

Wang, in addition, disagreed that Kim is planning on a second summit with Trump in Switzerland as he said such a summit isn't in the interests of either country.
