Reds boss Jurgen Klopp wants to bring in the Switzerland global, who is preparing to leave Stoke City following their relegation from the Premier League.

Newcastle United will only pursue a reunion with Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend if Matt Ritchie completes a move to Stoke.

Shaqiri, who has been away on World Cup duty with Switzerland in Russian Federation, was never likely to feature in relegated Stoke's 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship campaign and that proved to be true after Liverpool triggered his £13.5 million release clause.

The German wasted no time in starting his transfer business, bringing in Brazilian midfielder Fabinho from Monaco while Naby Keita completed his long-awaited move from RB Leipzig.

"I'm very happy to be here. When someone like him becomes available in this way you have to react if you are smart - and we have", Klopp told the club's official website.

'He joins a dressing room of really good lads and I know they will welcome him with open arms and help him settle and integrate quickly'. A few years ago I wanted to come too but it didn't happen.

Shaqiri moved to Stoke in 2015 from Inter Milan and scored 15 goals in 92 appearances for the Potters, who were relegated from the Premier League last season.

Xherdan Shaqiri looks set to become a Liverpool player this weekend, with strong reports of a medical due for Friday.

'Finally, Xherdan the person will fit in perfectly at Liverpool I believe.

Shaqiri helped Switzerland reach the round-of-16 of the World Cup, with Stoke hoping those performances in Russian Federation would spark an auction for the forward.

"I want to improve myself too, I want to be with the best and I want to win titles".
