Jones snatches 1st Cup win in crash-filled race at Daytona

The pole is the fourth of his career

Defending race victor Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has won the second stage of the Cup Series race at Daytona. Ty Dillon was sixth, followed by Matt DiBenedetto, Ryan Newman and Daytona 500 champion Austin Dillon. Jeffrey Earnhardt, Brendan Gaughan and D.J. Kennington were the final cars on the lead lap. "It's a first win". "I thought we were out of it and all of a sudden we're right back in it".

In fact, he went as far as saying that he "should have wrecked" William Byron, who used unsafe blocking maneuvers that collected several cars in one of the crashes.

Truex finished second, followed by AJ Allmendinger, Kasey Kahne and Chris Buescher.

STENHOUSE, AGAIN: Ricky Stenhouse Jr., the focus of much of the evening's caution activity, caused the eighth caution with 11 laps to go when damage on his vehicle caused a tire rub and eventually a tire failure.

JOHNSON PENALIZED: Jimmie Johnson, seeking to end a 40-race winless streak, was running up front with 40 laps to go when his crew serviced the vehicle outside its pit box.

Stenhouse also won the first stage, his first of the stage victory year. However, this wasn't the only big wreck that rocked the field during stage two.

After rookie William Byron took the lead, a wreck on the 57th didn't impact the front group.

Brad Keselowski won the battle off of pit road and would lead the field at the start of stage 2 in the Coe Zero 400 at Daytona. Byron and Busch were running 1-2 at the time. After a clean race to this point, on lap 47, the first caution of the day came out as Paul Menard got a bump from Jimmie Johnson on the backstretch. "Ricky (Stenhouse) was doing the best he could to give me a good push and had a great run to take the lead, and the vehicle in front of me just threw a late, bad block, Keselowski said".

Defending race victor Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has won the first stage of the Cup Series race at Daytona.

"When one auto sits sideways in front of the field at 200 miles per hour, you can't get through it", driver Joey Logano said of the mishaps.

"There was a ton of torn-up cars so I figured we'd be able to salvage something", Larson said, not knowing there would be a few more added to the wreckage by night's end.

Elliott and Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman are on the front row at Daytona, a needed boost for both the team and manufacturer Chevrolet.

Daytona 500 victor Austin Dillon didn't seem to be much of a factor, but he made it to the end of the night and finished ninth.
