IOS 11.4.1 is out with fresh fixes for iPhone and iPad

As usual, this iOS release also includes security updates.

It seems, however, that pressing matters may have forced Apple to nearly silently roll out its USB Restricted Mode feature in the new iOS 11.4.1 update.

iPhone and iPad owners, this one is for you!

There should be no reason why iOS 11.4.1 has caused issues on your device. It's only really a bug fix release and doesn't look to introduce any new functionality that should immediately break the performance of the device. However, Apple had not released the details on its security page at the time of this posting, but expect them to appear sometime soon.

The accompanying explanation gives no indication of its real objective: "Unlock iPhone to allow USB accessories to connect when it has been more than hour since your iPhone was locked", it says underneath a sliding bar.

iOS 11.4.1 users have the ability to flip the feature on or off under the Touch ID & Passcode or Face ID & Passcode settings menu, under USB Accessories. That seems to be the case for Apple's latest controversial security feature which was initially expected for iOS 12 in a few months.

Recently, we've seen the emergence of a number of devices, including the GrayBox, that allow third parties to gather data from your iPhone or iPad through the Lightning port without having to unlock your device beforehand. After almost a year of dealing with buggy iPhones and iPads, iOS 12 is already a breath of fresh air in is current beta state.

Today, the company released iOS 11.4.1, watchOS 4.3.2, and tvOS 11.4.1 to the general public. macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra is still listed as being in beta. Those releases are likely to come this fall.
