Indiana Jones 5 Gets New Release Date & Marvel Film

Disney and Lucasfilm will now release Indiana Jones 5 just ahead of Harrison Ford's 79th birthday

Back when Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out everyone landed in one of two camps: it sucked so much you never wanted another Indy movie, or it sucked so much you desperately wanted another one so they could time wipe it away from existence somehow.

For the past three years, Disney has released a Star Wars movie around Christmas: The Force Awakens in 2016, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016, and The Last Jedi in 2017. Also, Jonathan Kasdan is in the middle of signing his contract to rewrite Indiana Jones 5.

Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford are both returning for the next Indiana Jones movie. The delays and production demands mean that Steven Spielberg will delay work on the film, with a new date set for 9 July, 2021.

Disney announced a slew of new release dates including Indiana Jones 5 and an untitled Marvel film. That's because Spielberg is in pre-production on a reboot of West Side Story and even looking at directing The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara with Oscar victor Mark Rylance.

The advancing age of the franchise hero, who became popular when Ford was in his late 30s, is of natural concern for fans of the action-adventure series. Is a man approaching 80 really going to convincingly be able to go on a world-spanning, bare-knuckle-brawling adventure? Your mileage may vary, but we've yet to be convinced. The biggest question mark at this point is Harrison Ford. "Throw me the idol - I'll throw out my hip", right?
