In Supreme Court pick, Trump can push conservative social agenda

Court Confirmation Process Likely to Follow Gorsuch Playbook

President Donald Trump plans to announce his pick to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on July 9. In the third presidential debate in October of 2016, Trump was asked by moderator Chris Wallace if he wanted to see the Supreme Court overturn Roe.

He said Kennedy understood his role as a swing vote: "The justice knew that on many controversial issues he could tip the court and I think he appreciated that, and sought to create balance in the Constitution and in the constitutional law that the court issued".

Trump has said he wants the next Supreme Court justice he nominates to serve for up to 45 years.

In Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that the right to privacy extended to a woman's right to have an abortion.

Whoever the new justice is will pick up where Kennedy left off nearly surely will cast a more conservative vote next term.

"Justice Kennedy's retirement from the Supreme Court marks a pivotal moment for the fight to ensure every unborn child is welcomed and protected under the law", Ms. Dannenfelser said in a statement.

Trump responded by saying he assumed overturning Roe would happen "automatically" if he was able to appoint two or three justices to the bench as president.

"We're going to have great judges, conservative, all picked by the Federalist Society", Trump said during an interview on Breitbart News radio.

He was among several senators who met Thursday with Trump at the White House. She suggested she would contact Mr. Trump's assistant, but then made a decision to try to transmit the call "through signal", a reference to the White House Communications Agency, originally known as the White House Signal Corps, which provides emergency mobile communications for the president wherever he goes. Also of interest are Amul Thapar, who serves on the federal appeals court in Cincinnati, lives in Kentucky and is close to McConnell; Brett Kavanaugh, a former clerk for Kennedy who serves on the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C.; and Amy Coney Barrett, who serves on the federal appeals court in Chicago. "And with it, they hold the right to safe and legal abortion", Krasnoff said. And the White House is expressing optimism that some Democrats will ultimately come on board.

When a mobile communications officer did call back and put Mr. Trump on the line, Mr. Melendez played the part of the senator, although his voice sounded nothing like Mr. Menendez's. Democrats Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota also talked to Trump.

More quietly, abortion opponents are confident the next justice will be a vote to uphold additional restrictions on abortion, if not to actually jettison the landmark Roe decision.

"I have a good relationship with the president".

Trump told reporters Friday he would not ask potential nominees their views on abortion rights and Roe v. Wade.
