She was diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy before her second birthday and typically relies on two canes to walk.

Her brother can be heard in the background encouraging her by telling her she's already been walking for a minute.

The achievement has been called a "dream come true" by her family.

The now-viral clip shows Maya sitting on a small bench and teetering for her first two steps before plopping back down on the seat.

"I'm walking!. I'm walking!"

"Now that her spasticity is gone (or almost gone) she is able to do so many things that we never thought possible and is clearly more comfortable and happy", says Maya's parents.

In May, she and her family traveled to St. Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri, where she underwent a surgical procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR).

Maya lives with cerebral palsy, but it didn't stop her from beating the odds to take her first steps - steps doctors said she wouldn't be able to take for months.

The little girl has cerebral palsy but just received surgery and is now walking without anyone else's help.

In 2013, Maya was born prematurely at 26 weeks and weighed 1 pound, 10 ounces, according to her mother, Ann Tisdale. "Because of her CP, Maya is now unable to stand on her own for more than a few seconds, or walk without the use of walker".

Tisdale said that although Maya had been using the assistance of a walker since she was 1, Maya really desired to walk independently.

Seven weeks after her surgery, Maya took a few steps on her own which left her parents stunned. "She's just kind of blowing it out of the water", Tisdale said.

Ann wrote a moving caption to go with the video: "First steps - 4 years, 10 months".
