How do Johnson and Davis’ resignations affect the Prime Minister?

A far more familiar face here is Olly Robbins, the prime minister's Europe adviser. They quit amid divisions in the government over Brexit.

Theresa May has warned hardline Brexiters to fall into line or risk handing power to Jeremy Corbyn after Boris Johnson became the second cabinet minister to resign in 24 hours, claiming Britain was "headed for the status of colony".

James O'Brien spoke to this caller about David Davis.

Davis said he could not support May's plan to maintain close trade and regulatory ties with the European Union, which he said gave "too much away, too easily". "But so many times since this Brexit process began, we've had to ask ourselves: will she stay or will she go?"

He went on to explain how the current political turmoil in Britain will work to the EU's advantage in Brexit negotiations.

Certainly not what would be needed to make Theresa May's proposed third way for Brexit work as she now presents it.

Staunch Brexiteer Dominic Raab was named as Mr Davis's replacement as Secretary of State for Leaving the European Union, and a new foreign secretary was expected to be in place by the end of the day.

Now, Downing Street believes that the hot water the prime minister is in today will shock European Union leaders into realising they need to start compromising themselves - not just perpetually demanding capitulations on the UK's red lines.

Many took the opportunity to make fun of the former Brexit Secretary over his short tenure and the timing of his decision to quit.

After the cabinet meeting, Mrs May tweeted that she was "looking ahead to a busy week".

The British public no longer has faith in Theresa May to negotiate Brexit, with two in three saying they do not trust her to get the best possible deal, a Sky Data poll reveals.

While some Labour lawmakers might be tempted to vote for a Brexit that kept the United Kingdom inside the EU's customs union, they too were clear that the prime minister's proposals didn't go almost far enough.

He believed Mr Johnson's resignation bolstered support for Mrs May from Conservative MPs who want a "pragmatic approach" to Brexit.

"Nine ministers have now resigned from the two key Brexit departments since Article 50 was triggered".

The New Statesman says Leadsom is also "in with a shout" for the leadership, but the Daily Mirror points out that her failed bid to beat May in 2016 could damage her chances.

On Monday, her office attempted to woo lawmakers from the opposition Labour Party, a move that outraged dissident Conservatives, who are prepared to vote to block her plan if it comes to the House of Commons unchanged later in the year.

"It is as though we are sending our vanguard into battle with the white flags fluttering above them", Johnson wrote in a letter that underscored his credentials as a champion of full-speed Brexit.
