Heatwave prompts hose ban in N.Ireland

Heatwave prompts hose ban in N.Ireland

How can I reduce my water usage?

"It hasn't overly affected me but I would be watching how I use water anyway so I'm just kind of maintaining the same ways of what I would normally do".

"We probably sold more watering cans this weekend than we have in the last two months", he said.

"The way we have preventative water in our reservoirs, the challenge is getting enough treat it to supply our customers".

Elsewhere in the Midlands, the Portlaoise water supply and the Derryguile Water Treatment Plant in particular is coming under pressure with a potential impact on approximately 5,000 people.

The ban usually comes into play when it's hot outside, as the demand for water is a lot higher.

A spokesperson for Anglian Water said: "There's no chance of a hosepipe ban in the Anglian region this year".

Speaking about the legal move Corporate Affairs Manager and water conservation expert, Kate Gannon, said "Imposing a Water Conservation Order is a measure that Irish Water now consider appropriate". Fish ponds are also excluded from the ban.

Irish Water says that "the primary goal of these orders is to mobilise maximum public support and engagement on minimizing water use during the crisis".

The warmer weather has also brought water restrictions, and Irish Water have announced a hosepipe ban in the Greater Dublin area.

"We're only left with small watering cans. Once you go over that volume then you risk water quality and we can't put out water that's not treated to compliance standards".

Continuing, the IFA president added: "You're talking about an average cost of about 25c/kg DM of meal, 20c/kg for silage, and that compares to 8-10c/kg for grass - so that's the extra cost that farmers are enduring".

"When the current hot weather ends we will still need customers to be mindful of their water usage for the months ahead to protect the available water for the remainder of the summer and into the autumn".

"The demand for water is astronomical".

NI Water said its staff are work working "day and night" but some customers in more rural areas, including parts of Co Tyrone and Co Armagh, have been affected by supply shortages.
