'Germany is totally controlled by Russia': Trump at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit

Trump did not say 70 to 90 percent of what.

"I just don't know him very well". "It has been really awesome to see the level of spirit in that room". Very unified, very strong. "We are doing numbers like they've never done before or ever seen before".

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (center L) shakes hands with U.S. President Donald Trump during a NATO summit in Brussels, Belgium, July 11, 2018. Trump has repeatedly denounced low levels of defense spending among remaining members, particularly Germany.

It was not immediately clear what specific new commitments had been made.

"Germany is a captive of Russia because it is getting so much of its energy from Russia", Trump said, taking particular aim at the proposed Nord Stream II gas pipeline, which he has previously criticised.

"We have agreed that we're committed to the pledge increasing defense spending to 2%". They talk about how they are going to increase it [Nato spending] a tiny bit by 2030.

Instead, a series of events - a black-tie dinner with business leaders, a meeting with May and an audience with Queen Elizabeth - will happen outside the bustling city, where Mayor Sadiq Khan has been in a verbal battle with Trump. But Nato sources, speaking to Reuters, said he had denied making such a threat.

Invited leaders from non-NATO countries Afghanistan and Georgia were asked to leave along with most North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders' retinues of officials, as the heads of state and government of the Western alliance sought to deal with the man whose nation commands much of the budget and forces for Europe's defence.

Mr Trump's early-morning tweets from Brussels had been typically critical.

Under fire for his warm embrace of Russia's Vladimir Putin, Mr. Trump on Wednesday turned a harsh spotlight on Germany's own ties to Russian Federation, alleging that a natural gas pipeline venture with Moscow has left Angela Merkel's government "totally controlled" and "captive" to Russian Federation. "They pay only a fraction of their cost".

US President Donald Trump accused Germany on Wednesday of being a "captive" of Russian Federation due to its energy reliance and its support for the plan to double capacity of the Nord Stream pipeline under the Baltic Sea to Germany, bypassing traditional routes through Ukraine. "Not acceptable! All NATO Nations must meet their 2% commitment, and that must ultimately go to 4%!"

"NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is sidestepping questions about whether President Donald Trump has asked his allies to double their defence spending ambitions".

In his statement posted on Twitter, Kerry said Trump's broadside against an American ally had weakened the United States.

"Many countries owe us a tremendous amount of money from many years back, where they're delinquent as far as I'm concerned, because the United States has had to pay for them".

Leaders will be keen to hear more about Trump's military approach to Afghanistan, which he revamped last August to include a surge in air strikes to force Taliban militants to the negotiating table. "He is trying to make everyone look weak and doesn't understand how all the moving parts work".
