Geraldo on Helsinki Fallout: 'Trump Derangement Syndrome Is a Real Thing'

At a joint press conference in Helsinki, Putin said Trump "continues to maintain" that the annexation of Crimea was illegal, and he disagreed.

The remarks put him at odds with United States intelligence over claims of Russian interference in 2016 election.

Once more declaring the Russian summit "a great success", Trump again described the media as "the real enemy of the people", and tweeted that he is looking forward to a yet-to-be-scheduled "second meeting" with Putin to discuss "cyber attacks" as well as other issues.

How did Trump respond to Putin's suggestion?

The White House retreated from what Trump had called Putin's "incredible offer" during the Helsinki summit, revising its position just before the Senate voted overwhelmingly against the plan.

US Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted yesterday announcing that President Trump had asked for Putin to be invited to Washington this autumn. Axios reports that Putin proposed that Russia be allowed to question several U.S. citizens, including former U.S. Ambassador to Russia and a U.S. investor, in exchange for Russian interviews for Robert Mueller's probe, but the deal was shot down after backlash from the State Department.

There has been no word from Russian Federation about a second Trump-Putin meeting.

"Hopefully, President Putin will have the 12 identified Russians come to the United States to prove their innocence or guilt".

The possible decision to allow Russian investigators to question US former diplomats has sparked further fury and suspicion on Capitol Hill.

"There has never been a president as tough on Russian Federation as I have been", he said.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio also urged the White House on twitter to "publicly & unequivocally rule it out".

Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), one of Trump's most vocal Republican critics, had to agree.

Sergei Aksyonov, the governor of Crimea, told the Russian state-run news service RIA Novosti: "I am positive that [Putin] is doing everything in his power to [get the USA to] recognise Crimea [as a Russian region] and lift the sanctions".

In a possible dig at Mr Trump's unpredictable presidency, Mr Putin vaunted Russia's "consistent, responsible, independent foreign policy". Shortly after Sanders' statement, it passed unanimously a resolution - with a 98:0 vote - against allowing Russian Federation to interrogate Americans.

Trump has come under fire following the Helsinki talks for what many saw as his unsettling embrace of the Russian strongman - and his seeming disavowal of his own intelligence agencies and their assessment that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election.

There was also a sharp party split over the issue of Russian meddling in American elections.

Trump received bipartisan criticism from both sides of the political divide in the USA, prompting him to backtrack in a prepared statement.

The president's comments prompted top intelligence officials in his administration, as well as fellow Republican leaders in Congress, to reaffirm the findings that Russian Federation had tried to influence American voters.

Netanyahu on July 11 said he told Putin during a Kremlin meeting that he should encourage Iranian forces to leave Syria.

In the eyes of Lt. Col. Daniel Davis, a retired US army officer and now defense expert at Defense Priorities, a think tank, has said that "in regards USA interests, it is important not to focus too strongly on style over substance; personalities over policies".

"We can actually permit official representatives of the United States. into the country and they will be present at this questioning" of the 12 inside Russian Federation.

The invitation was extended to Putin by Bolton earlier on Thursday, according to a National Security Council spokesman.
