Father may lose all four limbs after contracting flesh-eating bacteria in NJ

His family said he suffers from Parkinson's which puts him at an increased risk for severe infection

Angel Perez' symptoms began after crabbing near Matts Landing in Southern New Jersey, NJ.com reports.

"It was swelling", she said.

Now, 60-year-old Perez is fighting for his life in the hospital and might have to his limbs amputated, his family told New Jersey Advance Media.

But the next day, the lower half of his right leg was in severe pain and swelling. Vibrio is specifically contracted after consuming raw or undercooked seafood or exposing a wound to seawater, the CDC says.

For Perez, the infection spread quickly - taking just hours for his limbs to swell and become discolored.

Experts advise anyone with open wounds or cuts to stay out of the water and those with compromised immune systems or chronic conditions to avoid eating raw shellfish.

His fingers and toes began turning dark brown and black, sores or blisters appeared on all his limbs.

"I have another family member that goes to that spot; she now has a rash on her leg, and her leg (had) painful swelling", Perez-Dilan said "She got antibiotics right away".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate there are about 80,000 Vibrio cases each year in the United States, and about 100 of them prove deadly. Perez can still breath on his own and communicate with his family.

In Perez's case, he is immunocompromised because he has Parkinson's disease.

"It can be risky and we don't know what we're getting into when we get in there", Perez-Dilan told WPVI. And then another friend of [my father's] that goes fishing there, he now has a baseball-size swelling of his elbow and that's where he's been going'. "That's why they do use boots - people use boots and covers to protect themselves", Perez-Dilan told WPVI.

"Typically, when you get an infection like this, it enters through an existing wound and can spread throughout the bloodstream and can cause other complications such as necrotizing fasciitis, which he unfortunately got", said Cumberland County Health Officer Megan Sheppard. We think water is safe.

"He's been praising God nonstop", Perez-Dilan said.
