Family tribute to Dawn Sturgess killed by Russian Novichok poisoning

Police continue looking into the mystery

Police continue looking into the mystery

The move comes a day after police opened a murder investigation into the death of Dawn Sturgess, who died from exposure to a Russian-made Novichok nerve agent.

Charlie Rowley is now conscious, but is in a critical but stable condition, Salisbury District Hospital has said.

In a statement released through the Met police, Sturgess's family said her death in hospital on Sunday, after falling ill along with her partner Charlie Rowley on June 30, "has been devastating for us". He is in a critical but stable condition, and is now conscious.

In a statement, the distillery said: "Novichok Edition has been in development for some time, and was only named and released after the Skripals had recovered".

The family also thanked the NHS and the team at Salisbury District Hospital who cared for Ms Sturgess for eight days after she was contaminated by Novichok.

"Dawn will always be remembered by us as a gentle soul who was generous to a fault", the family wrote.

They also wished Charlie Rowley a "speedy recovery".

Ms Sturgess lived in Salisbury, and the couple had been in the city before going to Mr Rowley's flat in nearby Amesbury on Friday 29 June.

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said police were unable to say if the nerve agent the couple were exposed to was linked to the March 4 attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in Salisbury. The two of them spent many weeks in hospital but survived the attack.

A dose of the nerve agent hunted by police in the Salisbury and Amesbury areas could be active for up to 50 years, police have said.

The UK government has blamed Russian Federation for the incident, but the country's authorities deny any involvement.

A bus that Ms Sturgess and Mr Rowley used the night before they collapsed has also tested negative for the deadly agent.

A police officer stands at a cordon around a public litter bin next to a supported housing project in Salisbury on July 5 after two people were exposed to Novichok nerve agent.

Dame Sally said it is "particularly important" for families to take care as the summer holidays begin for children.
