Families Of Rescued Thai Boys Embrace British Divers Who Saved Them

One of the two British divers who found the group said the rescue operation was "completely uncharted, unprecedented territory", and that he had not been certain the boys would be found alive.

Mr Jewell said: "The diving conditions were extremely challenging, there was poor visibility and responsibility for another human being's life".

"When you see Australians who are modest turn up in these most hard situations around the world and they just do what they believe is the right thing", he said.

"And all this time four fearless Navy Seals sat with the Wild Boars knowing they were in as much danger as the kids".

The Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex in Thailand - where 12 boys and their soccer coach were trapped for 18 days - will become a "living museum" to showcase the harrowing ordeal that unfolded in recent weeks as the world watched.

"The 4 Brits then did further supply dives to the soccer players, the coach and the four Thai Navy Seals which allowed them to prepare and sustain themselves for the rescue ultimately".

"Local climbing and rope access workers rigged the dry cave section for that part of the rescue and scoured the bush for more entrances to the cave".

With them are six Australian Federal Police cave divers, one Defence diver and a support crew who have been described as integral to the rescue operation.

John Volanthen said he's just relieved the boys are all alive, and praised the collective effort of the global contingent of rescuers.

He denied he was a hero and said he was using a "very unique skill set" to "give something back to the community".

He added: "We are not heroes".

Volunteers celebrate at a makeshift press centre in Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province on July 10, 2018, after the twelve boys and their football coach were rescued. "But I think at that point we realized the enormity of the situation and that's perhaps why it took awhile to get them all out".

"They should realise that not only have they given a gift to these boys and their families, they've given a gift to every other Australian".

Dr Harris and long time dive partner Craig Challen are up for our highest civilian honour, the Cross of Valour.

"We're very glad we could get you out alive".

Sadly just hours after making his way out of the cave, Harris received the heartbreaking news that his father had died.

The decision to swim members of a Thai youth soccer team to safety from a flooded cave was made only after all other options were exhausted, Australian cave diver and retrieval expert Richard "Harry" Harris says.
