Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan greets members of parliament from his governing AK Party as he arrives at a meeting at the Turkish parliament in Ankara, Turkey, July 7, 2018.

Under the new system, Erdogan will not only run the executive branch but also lead his Justice and Development Party in parliament where he is six short of a majority and therefore allied with a nationalist party. The introduction of the new presidential system marks the biggest overhaul of governance since the Turkish republic was established on the ruins of the Ottoman Empire almost a century ago.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim will on Monday go down in history as the 27th and final holder of the post in Turkey.

Turkey is expected to adopt an increasingly nationalistic line in its foreign policy with the conservative and Islamic-leaning AKP and the nationalist MHP in parliament. He defeated a coalition of opposition parties in a snap election last month to hold onto power.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement said the President told Erdogan on the telephone that he looked forward to the strengthening of relations between the two countries. Newly elected lawmakers were sworn in at parliament on Saturday.

Erdogan, who first came to power as premier in 2003, won 52.6 per cent of ballots cast in June, higher than the 51.79pc he garnered in the 2014 polls.

Its commentator Asli Aydintasbas wrote: "I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that we entered a "second republic" era", after the republic set up by Turkey's secular founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Those attending the ceremony at the presidential palace on Monday evening will include Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, in a new sign of the warm ties between Ankara and Moscow.

Together with dignitaries and guests, some 10,000 people participated in the inauguration ceremony. Turkish citizens from all walks of life, including teachers, firefighters, village heads, tradesmen, miners and dentists have been invited.

Soldiers fired a 101-gun salute during Erdogan's entrance to the presidential complex.

Presidents of Bulgaria, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Sudan, Guinea, Zambia, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Somalia, Mauritania, Gabon, Chad, Djibouti and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as well as Emir of Qatar, attended the inauguration.
