England got carried away with talk of the final, insists Roy Keane

Roy Keane didn't think so but was Ian Wright right to be celebrating or should supporters want more?

"It's Coming Home" has been the mantra of England fans, and sometimes even the players, for the last month and supporters were excitedly dreaming of taking on France in the final.

"Before the game, all the talk was about the final".

The former Manchester United and Ireland captain joined host Pougatch and a panel completed by former England internationals Gary Neville, Lee Dixon and Ian Wright.

"I made the point a few weeks ago, tongue in cheek, but you have to focus on one game".

The Three Lions lost 2-1 after extra time and left fans devastated.

Keane suggested that England's "It's Coming Home" banter meant everyone had got a little carried away before playing Croatia.

Keane, never one to let a potential dust-up pass, wasn't letting Wright forget that 1966 world champions England had been sent packing.

However, he was interrupted by Wright, who insisted: "We wasn't talking about the final, we were just having a laugh with ya".

But Keane remains stony-faced, replying: "You were getting carried away. We were happy, you weren't happy for us to be happy at that time". You were planning the final, where the parades were. You need a reality check man. Get excited when they get to the final man!

He took some flak, on social media, for his forthright views before, during and after the game but, when it came to the crunch, he cut to the core of England's failure.

Keane did credit the English players for their efforts in reaching the semis but reserved his highest praise for the victors, Croatia.

"The whole yesterday and today they were talking about the final the final the final", Keane began. You know how hard it is to get to these finals or even get to the World Cup.
