Dumoulin and Bardet lose time at Tour after bikes break

Third when the Tour last visited the climb dubbed "The Breton Alpe d'Huez" in 2015, UAE Team Emirates rider Martin made his move early, dancing clear of the field ahead of the kilometre-to-go banner before holding off a strong challenge from Frenchman Pierre Latour (Ag2R-La Mondiale) to claim only the second Tour stage win of his career and the first since 2013.

BMC's Greg Van Avermaet hung on to the yellow jersey, with Team Sky's Geraint Thomas moving up to second place, three seconds down.

"He was also the one who lifted morale and created a good atmosphere on the team bus", said Jurdie, and in the hours following Domont's fall there was a palpable sense of sadness around the team.

Mur de Bretagne, France (AP) - Sometimes in cycling the bike can be the rider's biggest enemy. I'll have to get through the Alps and see how I am, see how Froome is and go from there.

"It's never good to lose time".

Martin was one of several team leaders along with former Tour victor Vincenzo Nibali and two-time runner-up Nairo Quintana who were caught off-guard by an attack by Quick-Step 100 kilometers into the stage during a straightaway that was exposed to crosswinds.

"It was a boring stage, no wind, no stress just boring, I was talking to everybody", he said.

"My first thoughts are that I hope my wife hasn't gone into labour", smiled Martin as he caught his breath.

A group of five riders broke early on the 181km run from Brest to Mur-de-Bretagne and when the Quick Step team of stage contender Julian Alaphilippe suddenly accelerated on a plain, the peloton split into three with 100km remaining. "I'll try my best to win but you saw all that today".

It would have put him level with Froome overall, but the Team Sunweb rider was later handed a 20 second penalty for drifting behind the team cars.

Bardet would lose 31 seconds on the stage in a blow to the Frenchman's general classification hopes, while 2017 Giro d'Italia victor Dumoulin lost 53 seconds.

Van Avermaet, a BMC support rider for Porte, kept the yellow jersey for a third straight day. "I knew if I could get a gap it would be hard to close from behind". The 231km flat ride is the longest in this year's tournament.

"(Porte) can be confident after this climb", Van Avermaet said.

This was the first summit finish of this Tour.

The Dutch cyclist, who rides for Team Lotto NL-Jumbo, clocked almost six hours over the 231-kilometer (143.5-mile) trek from Fougeres, home to the best-preserved and largest medieval fortress in Europe, to Chartres, site of a vast cathedral known for its stained-glass windows.
