Drone in Superman garb crashes into French nuclear plant

A Superman drone remotely controlled by Greenpeace activists crashes into a spent fuel storage building at a nuclear power plant in Bugey

Greenpeace activists say they have crashed a drone into a French nuclear site, posting footage of the flight on the groups Facebook page.

"Our act once again demonstrates the extreme vulnerability of buildings of this type, which contains the main volume of radioactive substances", - stated in the page of "Greenpeace" on the social network Twitter, which also provides video coverage of the action.

While the drone was harmless, the group said its action showed how easy it was to fly it into the plant in France, a country which is heavily dependent on nuclear power. Greenpeace After crossing the Rhone river, Superman piloted its way between reactors to finally crash on the wall of the spent fuel storage pool building, near the reactor n°2.

France generates about 75 percent of its electricity from nuclear power in 19 nuclear sites operated by the state-controlled EDF.

Greenpeace said the spent-fuel buildings were not created to withstand outside attacks and were the most vulnerable part of French nuclear plants.

EDF insists the spent-fuel pool buildings can withstand natural disasters and accidents.

The EDF said two drones were intercepted by French police and that their presence "had no impact on the security of the installations".

Greenpeace said the stunt was aimed at exposing lax security at the facility, and they have a point.

Back in October Greenpeace activists broke in and managed to launch fireworks over EDF's Cattenom nuclear plant, despite security barriers.

"Spent-fuel pools must be turned into bunkers in order to make nuclear plants safer", Greenpeace France's chief nuclear campaigner Yannick Rousselet said. Last week 19 activists were handed suspended prison sentences for breaking into another plant in November 2017.

The overflights of power plants by drones are part of the topics raised by the parliamentary commission of inquiry on the safety and security of nuclear facilities, whose highly anticipated report will be presented Thursday.
