Blast targets convoy of JUI-F leader Akram Khan Durrani, 4 killed

At least four people were killed and 10 injured in an explosion near a Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) convoy headed back from an election rally here on Friday morning.

The bombing was the biggest attack in Pakistan in over a year.

It was the latest in a string of attacks that have spurred fears of violence ahead of nationwide polls on July 25, and underscored the fragility of Pakistan's dramatic gains in security.

Police had earlier said more than 1,000 people were in attendance at the rally.

"Mir Siraj Raisani succumbed to wounds while he was being shifted to Quetta", caretaker provincial Home Minister Agha Umar said.

Supporters of ousted Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif take part in a march towards the airport ahead of the arrival of Nawaz from London, in a rally in Lahore on July 13, 2018.

Durrani is running against cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI) is one of the front-runners in the July 25 vote. Another senior official, Qaim Lashari, also confirmed it was a suicide blast.

Pakistani Taliban have been targeting the members and the leaders of Durrani's party in the past for the religious group's support and participation in the democratic process, which the militants say is a system brought in by Western infidels.

Raisani is the second electoral candidate to be killed in pre-election violence this week.

At least 128 people, including Raisani, were killed in the deadly blast, police officials said.

Today's attack is the deadliest terror strike in Pakistan since the brazen terror assault on an Army school in Peshawar in December 2014 in which about 150 people, mostly students, were killed.

Local media has reported two separate minor bomb attacks in Balochistan's Khuzdar district and Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province during the month.

Mr Khan, who hopes to become the next prime minister, condemned Friday's attack against his opponent, Mr Durrani.

Haroon Bilour, a party leader, and 21 others were killed.

On Tuesday, a bomb claimed by the Pakistani Taliban targeted a rally by the Awami National Party (ANP) in the city of Peshawar. Thousands flocked to his funeral the next day.

"What credibility will these elections have when the government is taking such a drastic action against our people and this crackdown is taking place all over the country?" he told Reuters at the airport in Abu Dhabi as he waited for a connecting flight to Lahore. But analysts have long warned that the country has not tackled the root causes of extremism.
