Suicide bomber kills ANP candidate, supporters at election rally

A suicide bomb attack at an election rally in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar has killed at least 14 people, including prominent local politician Haroon Bilour, police said.

Haroon Bilour was approaching the rally organised in connection with his election campaign on Circular Road when the explosion took place.

More than 30 people injured in the explosion.

Following the blast, security forces reached the spot and cordoned off the area. Bilour's father, Bashir Ahmed Bilour, was killed by a suicide bomber during a meeting in 2012 ahead of the election.

"Tomorrow, if they attack me too, every party worker will come out as Haroon Bilour". He says another 35 people were wounded in the attack, including Bilour's 16-year-old son. ANP leader Iftikhar Hussain said the funeral prayers of Haroon Bilour will be offered on Wednesday at 5pm at Wazir Bagh in Peshawar.

Bashir was targeted in the Qisa Khwani Bazaar during an electioneering rally.

Punjab chief secretary was informed that days before he was killed in a drone attack in Afghanistan, TTP commander Mullah Fazalullah had issued directives to increase terrorist activities in Pakistan - to target the PPP and ANP during the general elections, in addition to carrying out terrorist attacks in various parts of Pakistan.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. "Moreover, there are threats to senior leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz", Nacta director Obaid Farooq said while briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Interior.

Condemning the attack, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan sought security for the political parties and their candidates during the election campaigns.

Expressing grief over the incident, Imran Khan demanded from the authorities to bring the culprits to justice.

He said Nacta had forwarded 12 threat alerts to the federal interior and provincial home ministries as well as law enforcement agencies.
