600 Kg Australian Monster Crocodile Caught After Eight Year Hunt

After nearly a decade on the loose, authorities have finally captured a "monster" Northern Territory crocodile.

"He was removed downstream from Katherine to help prevent human interaction in the more populated areas".

While the average saltwater crocodile is 17-feet-long, captures of this size are rare, wildlife authorities told CNN.

The Washington Post reports the near decade-long hunt for the croc known as "big fella" ended after rangers set a trap in the Katherine River last week.

In 2017, 371 crocodiles were captured by rangers in the Northern Territory cities of Darwin, Palmerston and Katherine alone, according to the department's website.

A near 5-metre crocodile that was captured in Taylor's Park in the Northern Territory, Australia is seen in this undated image obtained July 10, 2018.

A 15-foot, 1,300-pound saltwater croc was captured in Australia.

"He is the biggest crocodile the Wildlife Operations Team have ever caught in the Katherine River".

"Large crocodiles can move around Top End waterways undetected and you should always be crocwise", she said.

According to the government, the largest saltwater crocodile caught in a net in the region was pulled from Mary River in 1974.

"Yesterday afternoon rangers caught a 4.7m male saltwater crocodile in a trap on private property 60km downstream from Katherine", reads the post, which features a photo of the animal with six Parks and Wildlife employees to provide size comparison.

The crocodile population has exploded since they were declared a protected species in the 1970s, with the killing of an elderly woman a year ago reigniting calls to curb their numbers.
