'Abolish ICE' sign hung from Statue of Liberty

Rise and Resist a New York-based group that focuses on immigration policy claimed responsibility for the banner

The person was spotted trying to scale the Statue of Liberty shortly after seven people were arrested for unfurling a banner labelled "Abolish ICE" at its base, according to United States media.

A group of protesters were arrested before the climber scaled the statue. The other protesters, also with Rise and Resist, held a banner over the railing at the base of the statue.

Live video shows the woman sitting at the base of Lady Liberty as police prepare to get her down using a rope rescue system because she is refusing to cooperate. "We've had two unusual events occur back-to-back", National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis told ABC7's sister station, WABC-TV. The reports of the climber began around 3 p.m., not long after the "Abolish ICE" protest was underway.

Witnesses near Liberty Island shared photos of a person climbing up the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday as well. He said federal regulations prohibit hanging banners from the monument. The group said the woman who climbed to the base of the statue was not involved in the "Abolish ICE" protest. They oppose President Trump's administration and advocate ending deportations and family separations at the U.S. -Mexico border.

This is a developing story.
