The Olympic Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI) covers all enclosed places with public access, including the sporting venues, bars, restaurants and vehicles, as well as any enclosed place in the Olympic and Paralympic Villages.

The focus this year is "Tobacco and Heart Disease" to emphasize impact tobacco has on the cardiovascular health of people across the globe.

Dr. Yach is a former World Health Organization (WHO) Cabinet Director and Executive Director for noncommunicable diseases and mental health where he was deeply involved with the development of the world's treaty on tobacco control, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Even with brief exposure, second-hand smoke makes the blood stickier, increasing the risk of forming blood clots, which can cause heart attacks, strokes, angina and complete heart failure.

While in India and Indonesia, more than half of adults are unaware that smoking can cause strokes. But with prevention, those deaths could be prevented, Bettcher stressed.

More than 104 million people in India continue to put their health at risk by using combusted tobacco every day.

Of the over 7 million tobacco-related deaths annually, about 3 million are from heart diseases and stroke, and close to 900,000 are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke.

It said lack of awareness about the risks of tobacco use was most common in low and middle-income countries.

Not enough progressWHO and its member states established "World No Tobacco Day" in 1987 to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to its negative effects on health.

According to the report, no fewer that 1.1 billion people are smokers in the world today, the same number as at the turn of the century.

The general insurer found that 49 per cent of the older grup smoked due to work pressure, compared to 36 per cent of respondents in the younger group, while an nearly qual proportion of respondents in both groups stated that they smoked to relieve daily stress quickly.

The high level of carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke reduces the amount of oxygen the blood carries, causing vital organs such as heart, lungs, brain don't receive enough oxygen to perform everyday functions.

Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Public Health England, said the United Kingdom has the second lowest smoking rate in Europe after Sweden, which proves that the Government's tobacco-control policies are effective.

Foundation for a Smoke-Free World will fund innovative research to discover new cessation and harm-reduction tools that will save additional lives. Currently, one in four countries have insufficient data to monitor their tobacco epidemic.

In Indonesia, around 76 per cent of males aged above 15 years smoke cigarettes making it the country with most number of smokers, and around 315 million smokers reside within China.

Almost 80% of the more than 1 billion smokers worldwide live in low-and middle-income countries, where the burden of tobacco-related illness and death is heaviest.
