Whale dies with over 80 plastic bags in stomach

A male pilot whale has died after rescuers found it struggling in southern Thailand.

Thai marine authorities attempted to keep the animal afloat and nursed it for several days before it died.

The whale was discovered barely alive in a canal in the southern province of Songkhla on Monday, after which veterinarians treated it.

Each year, Thailand puts over one million pounds of garbage into the ocean, making it one of the biggest offenders on earth, along with China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Marine officials said that the plastic made the whale sick and prevented it from finding food.

Jatuporn Buruspat, head of the department, said the whale probably thought the floating plastic bags were food. 'We use a lot of plastic'.

The whale vomited up five bags during the rescue attempt before it died, the department said.

A post mortem found 80 pieces of plastic in inside it, weighing eight kilograms.

Thai marine biologist Thon Thamrongnawasawat told Agence France-Presse that the plastic stopped the whale from digesting food.

His post went on to encourage Thais to replace plastic bag usage with reusable bags, writing, "In the meantime, I can only ask, my friend, 'please, don't forget the fabric bag from home'".

Thailand is a major user of plastic bags and its government last month announced it was considering a levy on them. Kenya previous year enacted the world's toughest law against plastic bags.

Greenpeace's Tara urged the government to quickly enact regulations.
