Brazil's Philippe Coutinho celebrates scoring his side's opening goal in the first minute of stoppage time against Costa Rica.

In the 78th minute a brilliant Brazil attack was ended when Neymar got the ball in the box, turned inside and tried to make an absolute meal out of a stray hand from Costa Rica defender Oscar Duarte.

Brazil are not alone among the pre-tournament favourites in having a slow start in Russian Federation and Costa Rica captain Bryan Ruiz is hoping his side too can cause an upset to keep their chances of qualifying for the last 16 alive.

La Sele will play its final World Cup 2018 game against Switzerland on Wednesday at 12 pm Costa Rica time.

Members of La Sele react to their loss.

A Neymar corner was headed straight at Navas by Silva, and then Neymar won the ball back inside the Costa Rica half and raced to the edge of the area but whipped the shot wide.

The second half equally failed to produce a goal until the dying moments.

Serbia play the Swiss later on Friday, while Costa Rica are out of the tournament with defeats in both games so far.

At first, referee Bjorn Kuipers gave the spot-kick but the incident was looked at again by VAR and, though Gonzalez did grab at Neymar's jersey as he slipped, the contact appeared minimal prior to the world's most expensive footballer hitting the deck.

Neymar paid tribute to his team-mates and insists Brazil remain on course for the latter stages of the competition, saying: "The dream - no, the objective - is still alive".

Brazil's coach Tite also commented on his players tears, suggesting they could be down to the huge pressure of leading the five-times world champions. A Malayali girl is among the children who would accompany players with the ball for the Group E match to be staged at the St. Petersburg Stadium in Saint Petersburg.

Costa Rica are also likely to stick with the same side that lost to Serbia.

Brazil coach Tite announced his team the day before the game, with injured right back Danilo replaced by Fagner. Brazil opened with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland.
