In 2010, the US was a finalist to host the 2020 World Cup but lost to Qatar in a vote that was later discredited - but not reversed - because of widespread corruption in FIFA's ranks.

But Morocco, bidding for a fifth time, had closed the gap on "United 2026" to the point that nobody in Moscow wanted to make a public prediction ahead of the vote at the FIFA Congress, where 207 member associations, minus the four bidding nations, cast ballots.

The 2026 World Cup will expand to 48 teams from 32, and will feature a new format of 16 round-robin groups of three teams with the top two from each pool advancing to a 32-nation knockout round.

"Canada, Mexico, and the United States are ready to welcome the world to North America and serve as stewards of the largest FIFA World CupTM in history. However, it is important to note that both bids were deemed to have met the hosting requirements and a tournament in Morocco, close to Europe and in a country that loves football, had a great deal for English football fans to be excited about".

Today's vote, which occurred a day before the start of the 2018 FIFA World CupTM in Russian Federation, also marks the first time three nations have been selected to co‐host a FIFA World CupTM and the first time the FIFA World CupTM will be played in North America in 32 years.

Morocco FA president Fouzi Lekjaa said: "I would like to reaffirm the determination of my country, Morocco, to continue to work for football, to work for the youth and also to realise some day our dream to host the World Cup in Morocco". That avoids a potentially embarrassing meeting with his successor Gianni Infantino, German news agency DPA reported.

Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal are Canadian candidate host cities for the men's soccer showcase, expanded to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament. "We are all united in football".

The Kremlin said on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be glad to host everyone in Moscow, when asked if he would invite high-ranking USA officials.

The 3.6 million attendees remain a World Cup record, despite the fact that only 24 nations competed at the time.

The United bid made a presentation to UEFA officials on Tuesday, with CSA president Steve Reed handling the Canadian portion.

Vancouver will watch from the sidelines after the B.C. government, citing concerns over the possible costs of being a host city, was unable to come to terms with the bid committee. "But when I was five years old, a country called Canada welcomed us in", he told the Congress.

In 2002, Japan and South Korea both were granted automatic bids when they co-hosted the World Cup. Canada, for their part, has eight years to prepare a men's team worthy of their place at the party.
