Uber Will Start Paying Drivers Extra to Switch to Electric Vehicles

Uber is testing a new program that provides its drivers with extra cash incentives to switch to electric-powered cars.

The company announced the year-long pilot program, called EV Champions Initiative, on Tuesday. The program of monetary stimulation of taxi drivers will be introduced in seven communities: in Austin, Los Angeles, Montreal, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle. For instance, the company expects to break ground in the coming weeks on EV charging stations at its San Diego Greenlight Hub, a driver facility at 7310 Miramar Road.

Drivers of EVs in Los Angeles aren't eligible for financial perks as part of this pilot programme; however Uber plans to provide them with educational assistance. Jerry Brown's executive order, issued earlier this year, which calls on the state, now home to 410,000 EVs, to increase the number of zero-emission vehicles to 5 million by 2030. "While they love not paying for gas and being a part of automotive innovation, they also face challenges in losing fare-earning time to charge their vehicles, accessing adequate fast-charging stations in urban areas, and getting affordable access to higher mileage EVs". The EV Champions Initiative will address these three concerns. The idea is that drivers will be offered "direct monetary incentives" if they start driving an electric auto, though how much drivers are likely to receive will vary. And wherever drivers operate, there will be EV-specific app features, such as a notification for longer trips (30 minutes or more) to help them plan their charging times.

The third is the advocacy for shared-use of the vehicles, which comes with Uber joining Veloz that's a non-profit association comprising of public and private organizations, concentrating on addressing EV adoption needs of rideshare drivers in California.

Uber believes this small step will encourage conversations between riders and drivers about EVs. Info from partners like Plug In America will help drivers understand the benefits of electric.

This program builds off the success of existing pilots in Pittsburgh and Portland.
