U.S. singled out by G7 allies over steel and aluminum tariffs

European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstroem said the EU had tried "everything to avoid this outcome" in talks with Trump's administration over the last two months.

Trump tweeted this morning: "Canada has treated our Agricultural business and Farmers very poorly for a very long period of time". Highly restrictive on Trade!

"We want open markets, free markets but we have to convince the U.S. administration", German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said. Ryan said there are better ways to help American workers and consumers and that he plans to work with Trump on "those better options".

Industry experts have warned that EU retaliation could encourage the Trump administration to strike back with more trade barriers on items like European cars.

Canada and Mexico have retaliated with levies on billions of dollars of United States goods from orange juice to pork and the European Union is set to tax bourbon whiskey and Harley motorcycles after Washington risked a global trade war by imposing steel and aluminium tariffs. The taxes will stay in place until Washington ends its own restrictions.

Meanwhile, negotiations with Canada and Mexico to revise the North American Free Trade Agreement were "taking longer than we had hoped" and there was no "precise date" for concluding them, so their exemption also would be removed, Ross told reporters.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the tariffs were an affront to US-Canada relations.

French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has warned before the announcement that the European Union would take "all necessary measures" if the U.S. imposed the tariffs.

"It has been a tense and tough G7 - I would say it's been far more a G6 plus one than a G7", said Le Maire, who called the tariffs "unjustified".

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced that 25 percent tariffs on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum would take effect after exemptions expired for Canada, Mexico, and the European Union amid stagnating trade negotiations. Some of the tariffs would hurt the electoral districts of some of President Donald Trump's allies.

The EU "will react firmly" to defend its interests against steep United States trade tariffs on steel and aluminium, the European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker said yesterday (1 March).

"It's not everyone attacking the other and we see who remains standing at the end", he said, declaring that the stiff taxes would be "unjustified, unjustifiable and risky".

According to the most recent statistics from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative's website, the U.S. goods and services trade with Canada totalled an estimated US$673.9 billion in 2017. Well, they have a $2 billion surplus on steel with us.

"It's a lot of money but I'm still willing to support it, if it gets a NAFTA deal done in the short term", says Zekelman.

Trump's remarks follow a refusal by Trudeau to accept terms laid out by the USA administration.

The EU and Mexico responded swiftly by announcing that they will be imposing counter measures. The state sent $1.75 billion worth of goods to Canada in 2017 that could fall under the tariffs.
