"In conveying that message, I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message", CNN quoted Navarro as saying on Tuesday at the Wall Street Journal's annual CFO Network conference.

So each leader, Trump and Trudeau included, left the summit and went off to tell their publics how hard they had fought for the national interest.

The G7 summit came after the Trump administration chose to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union (EU), Canada and Mexico, which had drawn strong opposition from the domestic business community and USA major trading partners.

May was asked bluntly by Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable what point there was in the G7, but May pointed to a number of achievements made during the summit.

Trump announced on Saturday that he would not sign the standard Group of Seven (G-7) communique at the end of the summit - after Trudeau announced that all of the group's members had come to an agreement.

A spokeswoman for Trudeau, Eleanore Catenaro, declined to comment on Navarro's acknowledgement of a mistake.

US President Donald Trump has renewed his attacks on America's closest allies following the divisive G7 summit in Canada at the weekend.
