Kim-Trump summit: Where does it leave the main players?

North Korea said Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump will discuss "denuclearization" and "durable peace" on the Korean peninsula during their upcoming summit.

The coverage in the state-run paper, including 33 images of Mr. Trump, Mr. Kim and others at the summit, praised the "will of the top leaders of the two countries to put an end to the extreme hostile relations between the DPRK and the U.S".

Rather than a game-changer, this was more of a breakthrough in how the US and North Korea talk to each other. "No longer - sleep well tonight!" It's unclear whether the president informed USA allies in the region of his plan to end the "war games", as he called them, prior to his declaration.

To China, the agreement sounded like one they had been pushing all along, a "suspension for suspension", where the United States stops military drills with South Korea in exchange for North Korea halting missile and nuclear tests.

During a news conference after the summit, when asked why "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization" was not secured in the details of the agreement, Trump conceded that there simply was "no time".

Although Trump declared North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat, many experts are divided on whether the summit produced anything substantial, such as a clear timeline of denuclearization.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim and Trump agreed that "it is important to abide by the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action in achieving peace, stability and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

"I think over the weeks that they spent with us, they gained greater confidence that we are sort of no-nonsense but efficient people", he said.

Trump, seemingly unprompted, has long wanted to withdraw the US from South Korea, and now he may have found a reason.

"This guy wants to be around the world", Rodman said of Kim. The US had sided with South Korea in the conflict. Yu told American reporters, including one from the Herald, in Beijing this morning.

President Moon Jae-in spoke by phone with Mr Trump for 20 minutes late on Tuesday, but an official readout of the call made no mention of military exercises, according to Reuters.

But there has been scepticism from both Democrats and Republicans about the lack of detail and surprise announcement about an end to joint drills with South Korea.

"I think he's going to do these things", Trump said. But as his estrangement from traditional United States allies deepens and the outcomes of his summit with Kim Jong Un are disputed, an uncertain and challenging road is coming into clearer view. -North Korea summit, is expected to pick up a considerable portion of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's bills.

"The U.S. -South Korea joint exercises and U.S. forces in South Korea play significant roles for the security in East Asia", Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters Wednesday. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul. The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August.

Any reduction in tensions on its doorstep is welcome for China, North Korea's closest ally, which accounts for around 90 percent of Pyongyang's trade.
