White House aide apologises over 'special place in hell' comment

"That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did", Navarro said on the "Fox News Sunday" programme.

"I actually like Justin", Trump said.

"Somebody told me the other day that a few months ago [Canada] raised [tariffs] to 295% for dairy products", Trump said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Trump and Kim shook hands and posed for photos before their almost 40-minute one-on-one conversation behind closed doors.

Trump - by then in the air, bound for Singapore to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - vented on Twitter. No, I have a good relationship with Justin Trudeau. "He learned, that's going to cost a lot of money to the people of Canada". "(Trudeau) learned. You can't do that. The Canadian Prime Minister initially said Trump's claims that Canadian steel posed a national security threat were dishonest.

The insults stemmed from a closing G7 press conference on Saturday in which Trudeau called U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs. "He stated that not only does he support supply management, he is also committed to our dairy farmers, and a robust dairy sector", said DFC president Pierre Lampron.

This month, Trump imposed tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum from Canada and other American allies, a reversal from a previous indication that those countries would have an opportunity to avoid the tariffs.

On Tuesday, Trump said: "We have a big trade deficit with Canada.it's close to $100 billion a year deal loss". Dairy farmers, who number about 11,000, have an outsized influence in Canadian politics, being concentrated in the vote-rich provinces of Ontario and Quebec. "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!"

"Even if we gave him everything he wanted - and there is no way we would ever do that - who can say whether he'd be satisfied?" said one source, who declined to be identified given the extreme sensitivity of the situation. Still, Canada accounts for less than 3% of global trade, according to research firm Agri-Food Economic Systems. "He'll learn, he can't do that", Mr Trump said.

"The US faces the same (issue)", Frigon said, adding the United States also limited dairy imports with high tariffs, albeit much lower than Canada's.
