Donald Trump says North Korea no longer a nuclear threat: ‘sleep well!’

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that he expects North Korea to take steps toward major nuclear disarmament within the next two-and-a-half years.

U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un shake hands during an expanded bilateral meeting at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa, Singapore, June 12, 2018.

Pompeo also sought to downplay Trump's announcement on Tuesday that military exercises with South Korea would be suspended in return for North Korea's denuclearization. In the run-up to the summit, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a last-minute visit to the White House to secure Trump's support in pushing for the return of Japanese citizens abducted in North Korea. But big, joint U.S.

"It is clear that, through this summit, the severe security conditions that meant we were always on alert for incoming missiles (from North Korea) were alleviated", Suga said.

At his news conference, President Trump said it was hard to ensure anything but that he trusted his instinct that Mr Kim would abide by his word.

While Trump claimed a historic breakthrough at the most significant diplomatic event of his presidency, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, was more measured. "No longer - sleep well tonight!"

President Donald Trump falsely declared victory after his meeting with North Korea's leader and twisted history in celebrating his summit with Kim Jong Un. "President Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most unsafe problem".

Trump's failure to condemn one of the worst human rights records on the world stage is certain to inflame criticism that is already being leveled at him from both Democrats and Republicans in the wake of the summit.

The president said he trusted the North Korean leader to live up to his word in terms of the "comprehensive" agreement the two signed at this week's summit in Singapore.

Pompeo said Trump was alluding to the fact that it was the first time a sitting US president had met with Kim, adding that both leaders had a "blunt conversation" about the need for the communist state to rejoin the world community.

"Not all of that work appeared in the final document", Pompeo said.

There has been deep scepticism about the agreement, with observers saying it lacked detail on how North Korea would give up its nuclear weapons and how that process would be verified.

I could see that the excitement of the day and the punishing travel schedule had begun to wear on President Donald Trump by the time he came to the back of Air Force One to greet the travelling press before departing Singapore.

"Let me assure you that "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned", Pompeo said. Trump cast that decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue. It's unclear whether the president informed US allies in the region of his plan to end the "war games", as he called them, prior to his declaration. -South Korean drills was met with concern.

"All of that points to a new era of the relationship between the United States and North Korea", Tina Park, vice president of the NATO Association of Canada, told Global News.

The Trump administration is set to cancel the next joint military exercise on the Korean Peninsula scheduled for August, a report said on Wednesday.
