The number of American journalists allowed to witness the one-on-one meeting between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday was limited to seven - a smaller group than would usually be present for such a summit, and one that excluded representatives from the major wire services.

Robert King, who served as U.S. envoy on North Korean human-rights issues under the Obama administration, said Trump has used human rights as an instrument to get Kim Jong Un to negotiate on nuclear weapons, but not as a policy priority in its own right.

Several commentators on Twitter noted that Trump said nicer things about Kim Jong Un than he did about some USA allies.

Rodman spoke from Singapore, where he had traveled to play his part in the summit between the two nations.

It appears to reflect a new confidence among officials in North Korea that the isolated country has really been accepted onto the world stage.

Pompeo added the U.S.is "hopeful" the summit will "set the conditions for future productive talks".

"The entire world is watching the historic summit between (North Korea) and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit", Kim told Lee through an interpreter.

"The deep-rooted hostile relationship and the North Korean nuclear issue can not be resolved in one single action in a meeting between leaders", the president said after the cabinet meeting on Monday. But no one can credibly suggest that a durable or verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula can be achieved when North Korea remains a completely closed and totalitarian state.

They then moved into a roughly 40-minute one-on-one meeting, joined only by their interpreters, before including their advisers. I thought I was going to play basketball and meet the people and that was it.

The sense of fun in the reporting is also a contrast with the more sober way in which the North Korean media would usually handle an official trip.

Pyongyang has said it is willing to deal away its entire nuclear arsenal if the United States provides it with reliable security assurances and other benefits. "That's necessary and appropriate".

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing USA troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before".

It is also unclear whether USA officials will raise human rights issues in meetings with the North Koreans.

The almost four-hour summit went "better than anybody could have expected", Trump said; he claimed "a lot of progress", but did not elaborate.

While human rights will get a low billing in Singapore, Trump hasn't totally ignored the issue. Critics say ignoring the issue risks squandering leverage and abandoning the North's victims.

Kim smiled broadly Sunday evening as he met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

"We will get it done", Mr Trump told his much-younger counterpart, referring to cooperation between the two countries. "We appreciate your hospitality and professionalism and your friendship".

As Trump sought to build a bridge with Kim, he was smashing longtime alliances with Western allies with his abrasive performance at the G-7 and angry tweets directed at Trudeau and sent from aboard Air Force One as Trump flew from Quebec to Singapore.

Pompeo declined to comment on a question about the approximately 28,500 US servicemembers based in South Korea.

Following their meeting, President Trump will hold a media availability with reporters as Kim Jong Un departs back to North Korea.

Trump, in a post lunch walk with Kim around the grounds of the Capella Hotel, told reporters they were "heading for a signing".

The summit is scheduled to begin at 9am, the White House said. The North Korean leader was educated at a boarding school in Switzerland, where he studied English as well as taking instruction in German, although his grades were reportedly less than stellar, according to Vanity Fair.
