Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Responds to Trump’s Steel Tariffs: ‘This is Insulting’

On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau slammed President Donald Trump for his announcement that he planned to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum effective June 1.

The 25 percent tariff on steel and 10 percent tariff on aluminum was meant to protect national security by ensuring domestic production of the metals for military use, according to the administration.

New tariffs imposed by the United States on steel and aluminium from the European Union are "illegal", the UK's International Trade Secretary Liam Fox has said.

"Canadians have served alongside Americans in two World Wars and in Korea".

Mr. Trudeau said Mr. Trump's concerns about a trade deficit in steel are misplaced when it comes to Canada.

Carl Fey: If the WTO comes out and says these actions are not legitimate then it's sort of hard to imagine the USA is not going to listen to a WTO ruling. It's extremely hard to imagine the US being able to force such a long list of countries into giving in, especially since Trump is fighting a trade war on so many fronts at once.

Homstead said the tariffs on Canadian products coming to the United States will also hit his bottom line, even if he chooses to buy from an American company.

Trudeau retaliated by announcing reciprocal tariffs on USA imports. Although the NSS pledges to "work with our partners to contest China's unfair trade and economic practices", President Trump has shown little interest in such an agenda. Indeed, the NSS even pledged that the USA and Europe would "work together to counter...threats posed by Iran".

"In response to these measures, Canada intends to impose surtaxes or similar trade-restrictive countermeasures against up to C$16.6 billion in imports of steel, aluminum, and other products from the USA, representing the value of 2017 Canadian exports affected by the U.S. measures", Canada's government wrote on its official website.

The statement came as Wilbur Ross, the United States commerce secretary, and China's top economic official, Vice Premier Liu He, wrapped up a meeting on Beijing's pledge to narrow its trade surplus.

With all of this happening, an intense rush of NAFTA talks failed to generate a new agreement.

The US steel and aluminium tariffs were imposed early on Friday after Canada, Mexico and the European Union refused to accept quotas in negotiations with US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. We're still having those conversations.

According to a Reuters report, Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso called the usa tariff actions "deeply deplorable".

"I don't think in any way the U.S.is abandoning its leadership in the global economy, quite the contrary". And when they want to, then I'll be happy'.

For example, Chancellor Merkel opted for a more conciliatory stance towards China during her recent visit in Beijing, remarking that both Germany and China favors a rules-based trade system in hopes of opening up the Chinese market more for German exports.

What is worrying for the Trump administration is the fact that Canada, Mexico, the European Union and China are all retaliating and ceding very little ground. That's why I think that the president is right. "But we see no sign of that in this action today by the USA administration".

The world remained on the brink of a trade war today after China warned the United States against imposing new tariffs as talks between top officials did not end yield progress, while major U.S. allies bristled at being hit by protectionist measures.
