Trump adviser says Trudeau 'stabbed us in the back' at G7 summit

The Latest: Merkel finds Trump's action sobering, depressing

"I highlighted directly to the president that Canadians did not take it lightly that the United States has moved forward with significant tariffs on our steel and aluminum industry", Trudeau said Saturday.

Social media are abuzzzzz with the question.

After a trade advisor to Donald Trump indicated there's a "special place in hell" for the likes of Canada's Prime Minister, a top European Union (EU) official shot one back at the US administration by using the US President's favourite medium, Twitter.

If not, can someone explain what the public is seeing in this video? President Trump is sitting alone on one side of a table.

"I think sometimes, you know, you have to tell the schoolyard bully that they can't have your lunch money".

This clip received a surprising amount of online coverage, appearing on several different web sites offering varying amounts of skepticism about what it showed, while others sites, such as the disreputable Gateway Pundit, simply declared that "Justin has a falling eyebrow!" Take the WND Poll!

Based on that account, Trudeau wasn't the only G-7 leader who toned down the rhetoric in direct talks.

In response to Mr Trump's decision to withhold USA support for the summit conclusions, a senior United Kingdom government source said: "We stand by the commitments made in the G7 communique".

"It was a betrayal", Kudlow said on CNN's "State of the Union".

The G7 summit in Canada has ended in the escalation of a row over trade with US President Donald Trump withdrawing support for a communique, citing "false statements" by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau also said Canada would move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1 in response to tariffs on steel and aluminium imports into the U.S. from Canada, Mexico and European Union (EU) countries announced by Trump on May 31. "Canadians - we're polite, we're reasonable - but we also will not be pushed around".

"He did a great disservice to the whole G-7".

Responding to Trump, Trudeau's spokesperson Cameron Ahmad said: 'We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the G7 summit'.

Japan's Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasutoshi Nishimura, who briefed reporters after the first day of the summit, admitted that there "were lots of critical comments" about the US metal tariffs.

In the end, Trump never visited the sessions on climate or the ocean, but held its own news conference, where he slammed "unfair trade" and promised to cut ties with countries that didn't adhere to a "zero tariffs", policy, then leaving for a summit in Singapore.

President Donald Trump lashed out at U.S. allies Monday in a Twitter rant focusing on trade following a contentious G7 summit of economic powers in Canada at the weekend. "And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

But I digress - because none of these chaps compare to Justin Trudeau, for whom my adoration is as pure as his sea blue eyes.

The president also tweeted from aboard Air Force One that due to "Justin's false statements" the USA would not sign on with the other six members of the G-7 to a joint communique that was to follow the meeting. "He is a trade reformer, as I have argued again and again, and he put that out", Kudlow said, adding: "President Trump made it clear time and again in those two days outside of Quebec [City] that he wants to reinstitute a process of free trade, no tariffs, no tariff barriers, no quotas and subsidies - he was absolutely consistent during this entire trip".

And GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he was "confused" when he saw the remarks from Navarro. "He was even willing to sign that socialist communique".

Just as the Trudeau-hosted G7 meeting of the world's leading industrialized nations had seemed to weather Mr. Trump's threats of a trade war, the president backed out of the group's joint statement that Trudeau said all the leaders had come together to sign. "It is essentially double crossing", Kudlow told CNN's Jake Tapper. In the course of discussion, a compromise was reached, with the final wording speaking about commitment to "modernize the WTO to make it more fair as soon as possible".
