Aletta, the first tropical storm of the 2018 season in the Eastern Pacific Basin, is now moving west at around 7 miles per hour and will not be a threat to any land.

Aletta, the first named storm of the season, rapidly intensified Thursday night, becoming not only a hurricane but a powerhouse Category 4 Friday morning.

Hurricane Aletta strengthened to a powerful Category 4 storm in the open Pacific on Friday, but it was well off the Mexican coast and forecast to head farther out to sea.

The Weather Channel reported Aletta is centered just under 500 miles south of Mexico's Baja Peninsula. Both storms could cause high surf, rip currents, rainbands and possibly flash flooding to occur.

Interests along the Mexican coast from Acapulco to Zihuatanejo, Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos should monitor the progress of Bud in the week ahead.

Infrared satellite imagery now shows that Aletta continues to lose organization and has become less symmetric. A tropical depression is expected to form over the weekend as it moves westward off the coast of southern Mexico.

It was expected to become a hurricane late Sunday or early Monday, but was projected to weaken back to tropical storm force in cooler waters near the Baja California Peninsula.

With the formation of Aletta, the hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific basin is off to an early start. The first eastern Pacific hurricane forms on June 26 on average.

However, only one of these "A" hurricanes has reached Category 5 intensity, Hurricane Ava in June 1973, according to NOAA.
