Sen: Following election-day rebuke from Trump, Sanford falls in GOP primary

Runoff for SC GOP gubernatorial race; Rep. Smith wins Dem primary

Rep. Mark Sanford, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, lost his SC congressional seat hours after the president injected himself into the bitter Republican primary by stoking memories of the incumbent's public extramarital affair several years ago. But Trump was definitely a factor in making Sanford the second House Republican in 2018 to lose a primary.

That was a reference to Sanford's surprise disappearance from the state as governor, which he later revealed was to continue his affair with an Argentine woman.

ME voters were the nation's first to use a new voting system in a statewide election letting them rank candidates by preference rather than choosing just one.

Sanford, who was elected to the House of Representatives in 2013, was most recently polling at a statistical tie with his challenger, state Rep. Katie Arrington.

Tuesday, Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, had a stern answer to Trump's tweet. But as Sanford spoke, the race was still too close to call. It's the same reason Alabama Rep. Martha Roby, who blasted Trump after the "Access Hollywood" tape became public in 2016, is headed to a runoff to defend her seat. One seat they're targeting is in Nevada. Twice, they said yes. Rep. Kevin Cramer is expected to take home the Republican nomination Tuesday night. Voters approved it again.

In the Democratic primary in the 1st District, Joe Cunningham has 62 percent to Toby Smith's 37 percent. In the 4th District, vacated by retiring Rep. Ruben Kihuen, two former congressmen - Democrat Steven Horsford and Republican Cresent Hardy - are the favorites. State Sen. Jennifer T. Wexton beat five other candidates in the Democratic primary.

In the most recent count I've seen, Arrington is at 50.5 percent, only about 300 votes clear of a run-off (if my math is correct).

On the Democratic side, voters also face a choice between political experience and newcomer perspective. Hardy lost in 2016 to Democrat Ruben Kihuen, who is not seeking re-election after several women accused him of sexual misconduct. Now the seat is open after the new congressman resigned over a sexual harassment scandal.

Geren was declared the Democratic nominee by the Associated Press on Tuesday night.

In Democratic primaries - particularly three key House races in Virginia - the theme of this spring's primaries continued: Female candidates are winning at unprecedented rates and often by large margins.

In Virginia, a state legislator favored by the Virginia Democratic Party establishment won a crowded battle for the right to challenge one of the most endangered congressional Republicans in November's elections. This special election nearly didn't happen; Gov. Scott Walker (R) tried to cancel it, but the courts forced him to hold it.

The congressman, former governor and one-time presidential aspirant was trailing a little-known state lawmaker who slammed him for his repeated criticism of President Trump, the latest sign that the most unsafe thing to do in the modern GOP is dare to take on the president.
