Selection of North American bid could bring tournament to Edmonton

U.S., Canada and Mexico to Host World Cup in 2026

The United Bid Committee - the group responsible for landing the tournament in North America - says the World Cup is to bring in US$14 billion in revenue and US$11 billion in profits for Federation Internationale de Football Association.

A total of 200 voters from Fifa's member associations had to decide between Morocco or North America as host of the 2026 World Cup. "And I don't have enough information to know why they made the decision that they made, but they made it and we're better moving on at this stage because it's not coming to Vancouver".

The 2026 World Cup will be the first expanded tournament featuring 48 teams, up from the current 32-team competition. Although just four million players are registered in the USA, despite a population of a third of a billion, Cordeiro said he believes that amount can be tripled by bringing the game to our "disenfranchised and underserved".

Although it would be the first tournament to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of games will be held in the US.

There will also be significant costs associated with security for the event, but Tory said the city is counting on the partnerships with other governments to make that happen.

Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo, reporting from NY, said: "While the official name of the bid is United 2026, the three potential host nations are right now anything but united".

In March, B.C. Premier John Horgan said he was not willing to write a "blank cheque" to have Vancouver host soccer matches for the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

It's not unusual for cities to earn selection as team base camps even if they're not hosting matches. The 1994 World Cup ― which Brazil won in front of 94,000 fans at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California ― also led to the creation of Major League Soccer, the American professional league that began play in 1996. Luis Rubiales was not present at the FIFA Congress in Moscow, the RFEF president instead in Krasnodar to deliver the news that Julen Lopetegui had been sacked as coach just two days before their opening game with Portugal.

Forty-eight teams will compete in 80 games - 60 of them will be played in 10 US cities, while Canada and Mexico will each host 10.

"We are going to be ready".

Schmidt, who has played professionally in Frankfurt, Germany, for four years, believes Edmonton is well-positioned to co-host the worldwide soccer event.

For Morocco, it was the fifth time it had bid for the hosting rights to the football World Cup, calling it "the dream of a nation".
