Second win for British PM in crucial Brexit debate

In a day of drama, May's position seemed suddenly weaker when junior justice minister Phillip Lee, who has always been critical of the government's Brexit strategy, resigned and said he would vote against the government.

The fall-out from Britain's referendum vote in 2016 to leave the European Union has reshaped politics, deepening divisions within its main parties and raising tensions between its four nations - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It followed a strained parliamentary session, where the deep nationwide divisions opened up by Britain's vote to leave the European Union in 2016 were on display, with pro-EU lawmakers saying they had received death threats.

Heidi Allen was one of the 14 Tory rebels who struck a deal with the Prime Minister last night in order to back the EU Withdrawal Bill in parliament last night.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves 10 Downing Street to attend the weekly session of PMQs at parliament in London, Wednesday, June 13, 2018.

"I am incredibly sad to have had to announce my resignation as a minister in Her Majesty's government so that I can better speak up for my constituents and country over how Brexit is now being delivered", Lee said on Twitter.

'Certainly it now seem inevitable that the people economy and culture of my own constituency will be affected negatively.

Tory MPs are to discuss with ministers what will happen in the event of a no-deal Brexit - amid calls for Theresa May to honour "assurances" to them.

Nick Ferrari told a Conservative "rebel" that her job is to get on with delivering the Brexit at the people voted for.

But the concessions were the latest manoeuvre by a minority government that has been forced to compromise with parliament or to simply put votes off until a later date because of its inability to force through the policies it backs.

Mr Boles insisted he did not agree with Dr Lee on holding a referendum, but admired his "honesty and integrity".

During Commons exchanges, supporters of the EEA said it would be an economic "lifeboat" for the United Kingdom after Brexit by reducing the disruption to business.

But No10 said Dr Lee had been spoken to by chief whip Julian Smith and "reminded it is better to express such views in private in future". But how much of the proposed amendment has actually been accepted by the government?

Two more contentious bills - on trade and customs - are set to be debated before parliament breaks off for its summer recess, and pro-EU rebels are poised for a series of fresh confrontations, including over membership of the customs union.

Many pro-EU lawmakers want Parliament to be able to send the government back to the negotiating table if they don't like the terms of the deal, or if talks with the bloc break down.

MPs overturned six further amendments inserted into key legislation by peers.

The votes came after two days of bruising debate on the government's key piece of Brexit legislation - the European Union Withdrawal Bill, meant to disentangle Britain from the 28-nation bloc after four decades of membership.

The issue was at the heart of a knife-edge vote on Tuesday, which saw more than a dozen MPs, including Nicky Morgan and Ed Vaizey, called into the prime minister's office to be given last-minute reassurances their concerns would be addressed.

Mr Corbyn thanked the MPs who resigned for their "work with the Labour frontbench".

Mr Rees-Mogg told Newsnight that the concessions sought by Tories including Dominic Grieve would "gum up" negotiations with the EU. But May's fragile minority administration faces more bumps ahead as it tries to forge an exit route while being buffeted by both sides of Britain's debate about Europe.

'It would leave us with next to no say over rules we have to follow, it does not allow us to negotiate a new comprehensive UK-EU customs union and it fails to resolve the Irish border issue'.
