Red Bull’s Max Verstappen dominates practice at Canadian Grand Prix

Hamilton is concerned that doing this race with an old engine that will have lost a small amount of power over its life could be enough to make it hard to contend for victory at a track where he has won six times in 10 races.

Canada offers him scant hope of a reprieve, with this track's long straights likely to leave Red Bull, whose cars are best in high-downforce conditions, struggling behind Mercedes and Ferrari.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has hinted that Red Bull Racing is ready to take a gamble on Honda power units for the 2019 Formula 1 season, with a decision set to be made before the Austrian Grand.

Under-fire Dutchman Max Verstappen delivered a ideal riposte to his critics on Friday when he topped the times in both practice sessions for this weekend s Formula One Canadian Grand Prix. "There was some electrical stuff going on that hindered us this morning and then this afternoon, so not the best day, but we're OK".

Hamilton was on the ultra-soft tyres as was team-mate Valtteri Bottas in fifth, ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

Verstappen was the fastest throughout all three practice sessions in Montreal but he could only secure a third-placed start.

"Overall I was happy with the session".

"Didn't have any problems, " said Hamilton, who leads the championship standings by 14 points over Vettel and 38 over Ricciardo. "I think I can tell you tomorrow".

"We have the B-spec engine this weekend, the upgrade, and I think just configuring a few things on that, we're not necessarily aligned, so we just had to go through a little bit of trial and error".

Kimi Raikkonen in the other Ferrari and Monaco victor Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull are in the third row, with Nico Hulkenberg seventh and the best of the rest. The 36-year-old Spaniard fears the high-powered Montreal track will work against his McLaren auto.

It was the second time this season Verstappen has failed to finish.

Asked whether his Friday clean sweep meant pole position could be on the cards, Verstappen replied: "In terms of pole position, I think Mercedes will be very strong again. With what we had, I feel I did a not bad job".

Asked why he had experienced so many crashes, he paused before he said: "I don't know".

"Obviously if something happened in practice, we'd probably have to take one".

"If the others are sliding around in dirty air or whatever, we should be able to get a bit more out of them".

Third on the timesheet was Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

"We managed to get a few laps in at the end of FP3 and I did enough to feel what the vehicle was like". Fortunately the forecast looks good this year, with only partly cloudy skies predicted for both Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race.
